The use of lighting- or lack thereof- is especially effective, be it in the film’s tarot scene, or for when Kurt realizes what he has done. Though is the film itself rich in quality, or should it have been left fallow for a while? It certainly leaves a good first impression, as the direction is quite solid. One can probably tell there are plenty of digging metaphors going on. This is only the beginning of Kurt’s troubles. But while he can hide her remains, her spirit starts burrowing into his head, while Ivy tries to dig up the truth behind what happened to her daughter. To hide what he has done, Kurt buries her body deep underground. Echo gets killed when Kurt drives drunk home.
Things take a turn when a recluse called Kurt (Adams) moves down the road to restore an old farmhouse. Ivy, a former psychic, makes a living giving dodgy tarot card readings, while Echo hunts and listens to old-timey music.
Within Kurt’s reactions to every situation he encounters, Ivy’s prowess as a psychic takes on new power as her desperation to find her daughter becomes her only motivation in life.Ivy (Poser) and Echo (Zelda Adams: The Hatred 2018, Noble 2018) are a mother and daughter living in the Catskills. Echo is predictable enough in nature that her disappearance is reported within minutes of her mother’s return home one night. Despite this, it becomes clear, that Ivy works hard. Echo wears blue lipstick and we get to know her only through the music she listens to and some art around the house. Ivy and Echo are mother and daughter with Ivy, making money from tarot card readings. The first act gives only general clues as to each of the main characters’ motivations. However, for Kurt and one shot of whiskey too many, the bad decisions pile up quickly. It’s easy to assume the general population would own up to such a crime. “What would you do if you hit someone with your car?” Would you turn yourself in, or cover the crime up? On the flip side of this coin, it also asks “how far would you go to uncover the truth?.” The title’s landscape is as cold as the events of the opening scenes. At times I wanted it to pan around the setting it was in, however, its constraint is done willfully letting you see only what you are supposed to see.
Generally, the narrative is dialed back in favor of some trippy images to connect you to the minds of the people the film wants you to know. The whole film gives off the homely indie feel but makes excellent use of a minimalistic approach.
